DESPARATE ROMANTICS: THE EVOLUTION OF HADES AND PERSEPHONE’S MYTH FROM ANCIENT GREEKS TO PRE-RAFAELITES AND A. BELIY

Kononova N.O., Temirshina O.R.

Abstract

The myth about Hades and Persephone is analyzed in this article as an archetypical pattern, “characters’ structural precondition”. The pattern was widely used by artists and writers throughout the history of humankind. The paper is based on Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Metamorphoses by Ovid and a novel written by A. Beliy The Baptized Chinaman. Additional resources are the Renaissance and the Pre-Raphaelites art masterpieces and psychological work by C.G. Jung and С. Kerenyi Essays on a Science of Mythology. Methods such as comparative, mythological, psychological and linguistic analysis are applied in the paper. Cultural and philosophical ground of Hades and Persephone’s archetypes is examined. The most important characteristic among others is highly controversial relationship between gods and ambivalence of their characters, which demands a link component (mediator) to resolve the conflict. Pomegranate seeds are used as such symbolic mediators in the myth and a child narrator - in A. Beliy’s novel. The representation and embodiment of Hades’ archetype is Michael Letaev, while Kotik’s mother possesses Persephone’s traits. Plot allusions were distinguished and linguistic comparisons were made to prove the notion that neomyth about Hades and Persephone became the source of A. Beliy’s “desperate symbolism”. This neomyth contains archetypical motives and images which help Beliy to cross the line between reality and the world of unconscious, between words and symbols.

THE MOTHER ARCHETYPE IN THE POETRY OF N.A. KLYUEV

Ponomareva T.A.

Abstract

This article focuses on the mother’s archetype in Klyuev’s poetry. Archetypal variants of the mother’s image are mother goddess, mother earth, mother Motherland, mother wise old woman, who in turn have their artistic counterparts. The archetypal image of the mother-a wise old woman appears at Klyuev after the death in 1913 of the poet’ mother, when he begins to comprehend her role in his personal and creative life. In a series of “Isbania the song” the image of the mother acquires a sacred significance. She is portrayed as the guardian of the house, as a righteous woman, likened to the virgin, returns to earth as a “ethereal guest”. Another variant of the mother’s image, which dates back to the mythological Mother-the Raw earth, is “Mother nature”, “mother Earth, being the cradle”. The article also traces the development of images of Mother Russia, mother Motherland, Holy Russia, great Russia, feminized comparison: bride-Russ, Russ-beauty-girl, Russia-mother-in-law.

POETRY ON THE VERGE OF SILENCE: POETICAL ASCETICISM OF ANATOLII SHTEIGER - METAPHYSICAL CONTEXT

Abdokova M.B.

Abstract

The article looks upon characteristic properties of poetic style of one of the brightest examples of the “Paris note” movement - of baron Anatolii Sergeevich Shteiger (1907-1944). It finds etymological roots of his ascetic lexicon and imagery that determine the immanent characteristics of one of Georgy Adamovich’s most fascinating poetic followers. It outlines a methodological analysis of structural features that reflect the poet’s tendency for architectonic and lexical minimalism. The article justifies the necessity to systematically study Anatolii Shteiger’s legacy as part of Russian Émigré Literature.

MOTIVES OF CRIME, GUILT AND PUNISHMENT IN SH. IDIYATULLIN’S NOVEL “THE CITY OF BREZHNEV”

Kolyadich T.M.

Abstract

This paper considers the peculiarities of the motif’s structure in the novel of Sh. lduatulin “Gorod Brezhnev” “THE CITY OF BREZHNEV”. An assumption is made that the dominating motives are the motives of the crime, guilt and punishment, which are solved by the peculiarities of the language, comparative characteristics, dialog. The main supposition is linked with the suggestion that the author’s view is not dominating, the plot is defined by the subject views of the heroes, which have their own voices in the narrative, which is constructed from the episodes. Thus Sh. lduatullin solves his task linked with the representation of the motives.

DIVERSITY OF THE MODERN RUSSIAN POETRY

Zinurova E.S.

Abstract

This article is a panoramic slice of the modern Russian poetry. According to the author, now it’s hard to talk about “leading directions and currents”, because domination of the formal content of private poetics is obvious. Every authors tries to adhere to their stylistic stratagem. It follows from the consideration of the oeuvre of some of the most famous modern poets. The author believes that the Russian poetry has never been so multifarious as in the last two decades. Speaking about the significant trends in modern domestic lyrics, the author noted the appearance of the so-called “philological lyrics”, gradual moving from the phenomenon of prosaizing and marginalization towards the “lyrical essence as it is”. The author’s reasoning and conclusions are based on many critical and analytical publications in recent years.

Zarytovskaya V.N.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the non-linguistic issues of translation of modern Arabic literature into Russian and the problems of its distribution, which the author considers using the example of the novels of the only Arabic-language Nobel laureate in literature Nagib Mahfuz. The study analyzes the evolution of creativity of the Egyptian writer and discusses in detail two of his later novel, translated into Russian language - “The Journey of Ibn Fattouma” and “Wedding song”. The paper demonstrates the correspondence of these works to the European standards of the novel of the late twentieth century and emphasizes their cosmopolitanism as a feature of the late stage of Mahfouz creativity. The author raises the question of why the works of Arab writers deprived of “local color” and following the current trends of world literature remain unclaimed by publishers and readers.

DAS RÄTSEL BASAROW. IWAN TURGENJEW: “VÄTER UND SÖHNE”, SEIN BERÜHMTER ROMAN, NEU ÜBERSETZT - UND NEU GELESEN

Irmtraud G.
