AUTOMATED VOCABULARY EVALUATION IN A LEARNER CORPUS

Vinogradova O.I.

Abstract

When learners of English have to write texts in academic English, and in preparation for written parts of English examinations in particular, students need feedback when they submit their written works. Besides tips concerning content, coherence, and cohesion, grammatical range and accuracy, all of which are standardly included in instructor’s comments, students need advice on directions towards lexical improvements. However, such feedback requires a huge amount of time and effort on the part of instructor, whose workload is heavy enough to make any extra effort undesirable. A learner corpus may help in this, as its wealth of student texts allows researchers to make use of the many samples of student writing by applying certain computer tools. This paper reports the development of a system of automated lexical inspection of student works. Initially, we used essays in the corpus to work out which formal parameters in the essays demonstrate in what ways essays that have been evaluated highly by the examination experts can be distinguished, and then we applied those parameters in the process of automated inspection, after which we proceeded to checking the correlation between the inspection results and the traditional grading. Finally, after a system of lexical inspection of student essays was established, which paves way to the development of automated lexical feedback in order to orient students in how to improve the quality of their writing.

INVISIBLE TURKISMS IN THE OLZHAS SULEIMENOV’S BOOK “AZ I YA”: A PHILOLOGICAL ESSAY

Krasina E.A.

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the so-called “invisible Turkisms”, which are the object of discussion in the book “AZ i YA” by O. Suleimenov. The underlying methodological principle consists in the understanding of a specific bilingual situation based on cultural, historic and linguistic contacts between Ancient Russia (Rus) and the Steppe, which is revealed in the idiosyncratic style of the literary masterpiece - the text of “The Lay of Igor’s Warfare”. Sharing the views of O. Suleimenov - a port, a linguist, a turcologist and a bilingual personality, the article’s author tries to present the linguistic argumentation and explanation of the essence of “invisible” Turkisms in the ancient Russian poem, not using exclusively methods of linguistic reconstruction and etymological and paleographical analyses, but proceeding from the text analysis in the variety and multiplicity of its forms as well as taking into consideration syntagmatic, paradigmatic and functional text aspects. Using semiological strategies to analyze words and lexemes up to and including sound-and-letter contensive categories of the Cyrillic alphabet, the researcher manages to characterize main stages of semiosis as a coherent transition from the iconic signification to the symbolic one and simultaneously he tries to describe the emerging of symbolism and polysemy of words and lexemes in course of their textual using and semantic transformations. The text of “The Lay of Igor’s Warfare” which was rewritten and translated a great many times is te document of its epoch, and as an object of cultural, historical and philological heritage it’s going to retain the everlasting significance in becoming and developing of interdisciplinary research in the domain of humanities.

“LANGUAGE OF WRITING” OR “WRITING AS A LANGUAGE IN A SCRIPT”

Dzhusupov M.

Abstract

Analysis and description of some aspects of the content of O.O. Suleimenov’s book “The Code of a Word. Introduction into Universal Etymological Dictionary ‘1001 words’” is carried out in the arcticlereview, which is characterized by innovative approach to the problem of investigation of origin of a word, notion, sign, and pronunciation since the beginning of ancient time. Notion of writing and verbal word with different graphics image and different pronunciation is based on the scientific conception of O.O. Suleimenov, regardless of geographical, national, cultural and language differences. An ancient origin of a word (etymon) is considered as synthesis of four above-listed aspects of origin of a word, which forms common psychological image in human consciousness. The Author of the book defines the following goals: to reveal and describe the world of the code of a word to identify an etymon. Method of double negation (denial of negation) is used in the paper. It furthers departure from well-known linguistic postulates and creating new investigational methods and forming results in new directed conclusion. For instance, a sign is identified as involuntary phenomenon. It is different from Ferdinand de Saussure’s assertion about voluntariness of a sign, which is regarded as normative notion in modern linguistics. We use the method of triple negation (to deny denial of negation) and draw conclusion that sign is both voluntary and involuntary: different nations have different signs of the sun, therefore a sign is voluntary in this sense. But every sign of the sun (in ancient Egyptians, ancient Chinese, ancient Turkic) have origin of a sing (invariant) - circle, semicircle, square i.e. closedness, therefore a sign is involuntary in this sense. O.O. Suleimenov investigates language to reveal etymon deeply and widely than in traditional, philological approaches. It is common of philological, linguistic, historical, philosophic, gnosiological approaches and appropriate scientific generalization using method of denial of negation and five rules, which were developed and introduced by O.O. Suleimenov into the system of scientific research.

RODINA BOGOV (NOVELLO)

Suleimenov O.O.

Abstract
