Abstract
The article analyzes the activities of assistant barristers and their role in the history of the Russian Bar system. In particular, the author proves the proposition that in practice assistant barristers were an independent part of the Bar system. They were both jurors and members of private attorney institutions. In this regard, the article describes the main activities of St. Petersburg Council of barristers concerning assistant barristers, in particular their status, legal education, forms of control of their daily practice, etc. Simultaneously, the author pays special attention to the analysis of the creation and improvement of the legal base for assistant barristers’ activities. In the author’s opinion, it was done up to 1917. Particular attentionis paid to the work of the Commission of assistant barristers related to establishing and holding legal conferences at which there were delivered lectures and discussed essays on various topical issues of law practice.
