Abstract
Although the Shanghai Cooperation Organization remains relatively unknown in Western foreign policy analysis, it is the focus of some strong opinions. These viewpoints range from interpreting the SCO as an alliance directed against the West to those that make the case for engagement with the SCO as the best mechanism for achieving Western interests in the region. This short paper argues that as the SCO becomes better known and understood with time and research, views that consider the SCO as a threat will decrease and views that assess it positively for both the Central Asian region and for cooperation with West on common interests will increase.
