Author Guidelines

When preparing the manuscript, authors are kindly requested to adhere to the following guidelines.

These guidelines are prepared in accordance with COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines, ORI (the Office of Research Integrity), CSE (Council of Science Editors) and EASE (European Association of Science Editors) guidelines.

I. Manuscript requirements

We accept submissions strictly online, via the form available at our website.
Please upload your manuscript as a Microsoft Office Word document (*.doc, *.docx and *.rtf formats).

    1. Length of the manuscript should be no less than 40,000 characters and no more than 60,000 characters (including spaces). Please consult the MS Word built-in statistics service prior to submission in order to find out the exact length of your manuscript.
    2. Text formatting. The text is typed by fonts included in Windows, and if this is not possible, the fonts should be provided to the editor with the article. Lettering in Times New Roman is preferable in all cases (font size 14 pt with 1.5 line spacing and 2 cm margins). Kindly refrain from using underlining in your document (italic and bold formatting is acceptable).
    3. File structure. The journal editorial board prefers to receive a manuscript as a single complete file with all figures, tables and any additional supplemental materials.

II. Structure of the manuscript

  • Article title. Best article titles bear short, clear and distinctive messages.
  • Authors.  The author’s surname should be indicated after the initials of the name and patronymic (PS Ivanov, SI Petrov, IP Sidorov).
  • Affiliated institutions should be listed beneath the title on the opening page of the manuscript. Please provide the official FULL name of the institution (no abbreviations). After the name of the institution, please write the name of the city, country, separated by commas. If authors from different institutions took part in writing the manuscript, it is necessary to correlate the names of the institutions and the names of the authors by adding numeric indexes in upper case before the names of the institutions and after the names of the respective authors.
  • Abstract of an original study should start with some brief background information and statement of the study’s aims, followed by materials & methods and finishing with the results. The closing sentence should outline the main conclusions of the study in the most comprehensible terms. Please note that your abstract should be no more than 250 words for an English-language article.
  • Choice of keywords. 7 to 10 keywords are preferable. Keywords must match in Russian and English.
  • The body of the text should start with a brief introduction, describing the paper’s significance. In the case of an original study, the body of the paper should follow a common structured approach to the description of the studies aim, its materials, methods and results, as well as conclusion sections (the results of own research are summed up, the results are briefly reported and their significance is assessed; the use of citations and references is not recommended).
  • Additional information section may be presented in Russian, English or both languages. It should comprise the following:

    • Clarification regarding any potential or actual conflicts of interest of the authors. Any affiliations, financial relations, financial or political interests in the manuscript as a whole or in part, including employment and other liabilities that may result in withholding or deliberate corruption of data or adversely influenced interpretation, are considered a conflict of interest and must be explicitly stated as such. Please note that conflicts of interest do not impede a publication, though failure to disclose one does.
    • A brief list of funding sources for the results reported in the paper, as well as the publication process itself (g.,a commercial organization, a foundation or government grant, etc.).
    • Authors can express their gratitude to the people and organizations that contributed to the publication of the article in the journal but are not its authors.
    • Information about the contribution of each author (and the persons named in the "Acknowledgments" section). Example: Contribution of the authors: I.I. Ivanov - the concept and design of the study; P.P. Petrov - collection and processing of materials; S.S. Sidorov - analysis of the data obtained, writing the text.
    • List of references  should be organized according to the Harvard guidelines (Imperial College London (http://www.imperial.ac.uk/admin-services/library/learning-support/reference-management/harvard-style/your-reference-list/). The following are the principle points you should be aware of while preparing your manuscript for submission:

- Number of references not less than 20 for original studies. Up to 60 sources (by agreement with the editors, this number can be increased - if objectively necessary) for reviews.

- Self-citation should be avoided unless it seems necessary (for example, if there are no other sources of information, or the present work was carried out based on or as a continuation of the cited research).

- A complete list of all authors should be presented in every bibliographical entry. Do not shorten titles of your citations.

Detailed rules for references formatting can be found in the special section.

  • Contact Information

The contact information of ALL AUTHORS must be specified sequentially. The section should contain the following information about each author:

- full name, academic degree, academic title, position, structural unit, and full name of the organization (main place of work),

- postal work address (with zip code and country indication), e-mail address, work phone number (with city code), mobile phone number (required for prompt communication with the author, it will not be posted in the published version of the manuscript or transferred to third parties),

- ORCID identifier (more details at http://orcid.org/).

III. Tables

They should be placed in the text of the article, have a numbered heading and clearly marked columns, convenient and easy to read. These tables should correspond to the numbers in the text but should not duplicate the information presented in it. References to tables in the text are required.

VI. Drawings

The amount of graphic material is minimal (except for works where it is justified by the nature of the research). Each drawing must be accompanied by a numbered caption. References to figures in the text are required.

Example:

Fig. 1. Dynamics of indicators of the studied processes

  • Illustrations (graphs, diagrams, pie charts, drawings) drawn by means of MS Office should be contrasting and clear. Illustrations should be made in a separate file and saved as an image (in * .jpeg, * .bmp, * .gif format), and then placed in the manuscript file as a fixed drawing. It is unacceptable to apply any elements by means of MS WORD on top of the figure inserted into the manuscript file (arrows, signatures) due to the high risk of losing them at the stages of editing and layout.
  • Photos, prints of monitor screens (screenshots) and other non-drawn illustrations must be inserted into the text of the manuscript, and also uploaded separately in a special section of the form for submitting an article in the format of *.jpeg, *.bmp, *.gif files (* doc and *.docx if additional markings are applied to the image). Image resolution must be > 300 dpi. Image files must be named according to the figure number in the text. In the description of the file, the caption should be given separately, which must correspond to the name of the photograph placed in the text.

(example: Fig. 2. Sechenov Ivan Mikhailovich).

If the manuscript contains figures previously published in other publications, the author must provide the editors with the permission of the copyright holder to publish this image in another journal (with the correct indication of the corresponding journal), otherwise it will be considered plagiarism (see Ethics of Scientific Publications for details).

V. Abbreviations

All abbreviations and symbols used must be deciphered in the notes to the tables and figure captions, indicating the statistical criteria (methods) used and the parameters of statistical variability (standard deviation, standard error of the mean, etc.). It is recommended to indicate the statistical reliability / uncertainty of the differences in the data presented in the tables with superscript symbols *, **, †, ††, ‡, ‡‡, etc.

VI. Ethical conformity

To publish the results of experimental studies involving humans, it is necessary to indicate whether the study participants signed informed consent. It is necessary to indicate whether the research protocol was approved by the ethics committee (with the name of the relevant organization, its location, protocol number and the date of the committee meeting). Details about the principles of publication ethics, which are guided by the editorial staff of the journal, are set out in the section Ethical principles of the journal.

VII. Accompanying documents

When submitting a manuscript to the editorial office of the journal, it is necessary to additionally upload files containing scanned images of completed and certified accompanying documents (in *.pdf or *.jpg format).

The required documents include a cover letter signed by all authors of the article (or several letters, collectively containing the signatures of all authors of the manuscript).

  • In the case when the authors of the manuscript work in different institutions, cities, countries, you can submit several cover letters; in this case, the editorial office of the journal must have the signatures of ALL AUTHORS of the manuscript.
  • For articles of employees and students at RUDN University (including postgraduate and doctoral studies) - the cover letter must be drawn up on the official letterhead of the faculty / institute and certified by the head of the faculty / institute and research supervisor (of the post-graduate or doctoral student, respectively).

GENERAL RULES FOR DESIGNING FOOTNOTES

A footnote is placed in the text of a scientific work to:

  • form direct or indirect citation of a source or scientific literature,
  • indicate additional sources or literature, which are essential to be familiarized with for a more complete study of the problem,
  • create a note to the main text.

In all cases, the footnote is formatted as follows: in the Word program, open the "References" tab, then "Insert footnote". Footnotes are always placed after the quotation or the place in the text that needs instructions, but before the punctuation mark.

When preparing articles, authors are strongly discouraged from making references to dissertations and dissertation abstracts.

CITING IN THE TEXT OF ARTICLE

  • A citation is the part of the reference whenever you directly quote from, paraphrase, summarize or refer to work produced by another author.
  • The Harvard standard is the most common format in European and American scientific publications of various profiles. The widespread use of the Harvard standard is due to the fact that it is one of the most simple and intuitive in design and at the same time allows you to specify all the necessary information about the source of information used. Harvard style requires the use of a partial reference to the sources you are referring to in the text of your article. The in-text citation appears in the format of author-date or name-date enclosed in brackets, e.g.(Watson, 2008).
  • You should include page numbers if you quote directly from the text, paraphrase specific ideas or explanations, or use an image, diagram, table, etc. from a source, e.g., (Hegel, 2001:5).
  • For Legal Sources (Legislation/Cases) use Footnotes.

REFERENCE LIST EXAMPLE

List of references  should be organized according to the Harvard guidelines (Imperial College London (http://www.imperial.ac.uk/admin-services/library/learning-support/reference-management/harvard-style/your-reference-list/). The following are the principle points you should be aware of while preparing your manuscript for submission:

  • References should be.
  • Number of references is from 25 for original studies.
  • A complete list of all authors should be presented in every bibliographical entry. Do not shorten titles of your citations.

Journal article: online / electronic

Most online articles will have a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and you should use this in your reference. The DOI is a permanent identifier provided by publishers so that the article can always be found. If the article has a DOI you will not usually be required to add a date of access.

If there is no DOI then you should use the URL and include date of access. Some lecturers will ask you to reference and online journal article as a print article, so always check your coursework guidance.

To find the DOI, when you read an article online, check the article details as you will usually find it at the start of the article. For more help, contact your librarian.

If you read the article in a full-text database service, such as Factiva or EBSCO, and do not have a DOI or direct URL to the article you should use the database URL.
