The reconstruction of the history of Roman land surveying, which was the most sophisticated land surveying system of antiquity, is among the pressing scholarly tasks, and it is impossible without clarifying the differences among its constituent elements. Many of these are mentioned in the Libri Coloniarum (Books of Colonies), a source that still requires a new critical edition and has, until the beginning of the 21st century, received insufficient scholarly attention. The purpose of this study is to determine the nature of the so-called limites Gallici and to explain the origin of this designation. The study is based on current understanding of the features and functioning of the gromatic (land surveying) textual tradition. The analysis examines the available evidence concerning the “Gallic” limites, as well as the associated “maritime” and “mountain” limites . According to the popular interpretation, the “Gallic”, “marine”, and “mountain” limites represented three different types of limites widespread in specific localities. However, this hypothesis finds no unambiguous support in the sources. It has been concluded that, in the cases examined, the names of these limites were determined by their function as public roads, and the “Gallic” limites were oriented toward the ager Gallicus (“Gallic Field”). This interpretation is consistent with the evidence of the Libri Coloniarum , according to which the “Gallic” limites were located near, but not on the very territory of the ager Gallicus. Thus, it seems that they could have been integrated into local road systems leading in its direction. The prevalence of land surveys using “Gallic”, “marine”, and “mountain” limites in the Late Republican period indicates that the tightening of requirements for land surveys, including the orientation of limites , was gradual.</p>
ч. к ориентации лимитов, было постепенным.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>limitation</kwd><kwd>Libri Coloniarum</kwd><kwd>ager Gallicus</kwd><kwd>public roads</kwd><kwd>land management in Ancient Rome</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>лимитация</kwd><kwd>Книги колоний</kwd><kwd>ager Gallicus</kwd><kwd>общественные дороги</kwd><kwd>землеустройство в Древнем Риме</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><award-group><funding-source><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="ru">Статья подготовлена при поддержке гранта РНФ № 24-78-10152 «Этнокультурное взаимодействие в Средиземноморье IV–I вв. до н.э.: политика, религия и интеллектуальная жизнь (Италия, Египет, Малая Азия)».</institution></institution-wrap><institution-wrap><institution xml:lang="en">The article was prepared with the support of the Russian Science Foundation (RSF) Grant No. 24-78-10152 “Ethnocultural Interaction in the Mediterranean in the 4th–1st centuries BC: Politics, Religion, and Intellectual Life (Italy, Egypt, Asia Minor)”.</institution></institution-wrap></funding-source></award-group></funding-group></article-meta><fn-group/></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Gvozdeva IA.
