Among the Hellenic athletes of the archaic and classical periods, victory in Olympia was considered the most honorable, and the honorable lists of athletes’ achievements always began with victories in Olympia. However, Theagenes, whose career was one of the most brilliant in the history of ancient sports, only participated in Olympic competitions twice. Based on written sources and epigraphic data, the author shows that the reasons for the athlete’s behavior could be explained both by the social and financial situation of Theagenes’ family, and hence by the specifics of the schedule of his participation in the Panhellenic and local Games, as well as by the specifics of the organization of the Olympic Games. Statistical analysis of the chronology of Theagenes’ victories allowed the author to assume that if we take into account the version that Theagenes’ family did not belong to the aristocracy of Thasos, then this explains his desire to participate in local games with valuable prizes, and unwillingness to waste a month dedicated to training before the Olympic Games. Therefore, Theagenes was able to participate only in the 75th and 76th Olympiads, when he became financially independent, where he won two victories, in a boxing in and in pankration. His further absence from the Olympics is due to the fine imposed on him by the Hellenicists after the duel with Euthymos of Lokri, and the subsequent end of Theagenes’ career.</p>
Дальнейшее же отсутствие Феагена на Олимпиадах связано с наложенным на него элланодиками после поединка с Евфимом из Локр штрафом и последующим завершением карьеры.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>boxing</kwd><kwd>pankration</kwd><kwd>Nemean Games</kwd><kwd>Isthmian Games</kwd><kwd>Pausanias</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>кулачный бой</kwd><kwd>панкратион</kwd><kwd>Немейские игры</kwd><kwd>Истмийские игры</kwd><kwd>Павсаний</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group/></article-meta><fn-group/></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><mixed-citation>Crowther NB.
