Richard Rorty says that irony is a good mode for postmodern intellectual life. But attention to the text suggests «that Mendes Pinto provided» a much more subtle and nihilistic irony than Rorty imagines, and that his text is a plea for toleration in only the most attenuated sense.</abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="ru">«Странствия» Фернана Мендеса Пинто рассматриваются автором с точки зрения «интерпретативной истории». Оценки португальским путешественником азиатов и азиатского образа жизни изучаются исходя из характеристики взглядов, убеждений самого Мендеса Пинто. Кто он: иезуит, августинианец, искатель приключений, хитроумный обманщик... В рамках дискуссии с такими исследователями творчества Мендеса Пинто, как Р. Кац и Р.
