The article posits the presupposition that the byliny historically both delineate and propagate preferred socio-cultural characteristics that explicitly circumscribe Russian national identity. According to the author, the byliny exhibit three rather conspicuous distinct virtues as defining membership within the Rus clan: the love for and ability to conquer nature, the absence of spatial and temporal relevancy and being builders - these are the qualities that make Rus unique and are subsequently celebrated as cultural characteristics in the byliny. The article also briefly traces the history and form of the byliny.
В статье также кратко прослеживается история и форма былин.</trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Byliny</kwd><kwd>Skomoroxi</kwd><kwd>Bogatyri</kwd><kwd>Ilya Muromets</kwd><kwd>Dobrynia Nikitich</kwd><kwd>Aliosha Popovich</kwd><kwd>Russian Folklore</kwd><kwd>Russian National Identity</kwd><kwd>Russian Society</kwd><kwd>Russian Culture</kwd><kwd>Russian History</kwd><kwd>Folklore National Identity</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>былины</kwd><kwd>скоморохи</kwd><kwd>богатыри</kwd><kwd>Илья Муромец</kwd><kwd>Добрыня Никитич</kwd><kwd>Алеша Попович</kwd><kwd>русский фольклор</kwd><kwd>российское национальное самосознание</kwd><kwd>российское общество</kwd><kwd>русская культура</kwd><kwd>российская история</kwd><kwd>фольклор</kwd><kwd>национальная самобытность</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><mixed-citation>Pohl M.
