Merton’s theory of serendipity, which explores the factor of “non-random chance” in the nonlinear production of a specific type of scientific innovation - a “by-product” of planned research, manifesting itself as a “self-fulfilling prophecy” and unanticipated consequences of scientists’ purposive social actions. Serendipity is characterized by the explanation of the data that does not meet researchers’ expectations, seems incompatible with the dominant theory and established facts and has the strategic significance for a new theory or the qualitative development of the existing one. The discourse of serendipity determines scientists’ competition for the recognition of the priority in specific innovative knowledge - the author considers the special functions of neologisms that stimulate and consolidate scientific innovations. The article reveals the essence of Merton’s view on the ambivalent consequences of the “non-random chance” in science, emphasizing the social responsibility of scientists for developing the culture of trust in the scientific knowledge in the context of producing innovations. The author proves the importance of Merton’s ideas on how to legitimize the scientist’s priority for innovation and how to practically organize the management of serendipitous discoveries in science at the macro- and micro-level. The relevance of updating the serendipity theory is determined by its implied strategy for forming institutional scientific and educational structures aimed at training professional sociologists as experts that are to develop creativity, courage of thought and innovative competencies essential for ensuring the country’s scientific-technological leadership.</p>
Востребованность актуализации теории серендипити обусловлена тем, что в ней обосновывается стратегия формирования институциональных научных и образовательных структур, нацеленных на подготовку социологов-профессионалов как экспертов, призванных формировать у себя креативность, смелость мысли и инновационные компетенции, столь необходимые для обеспечения научно-технологического лидерства страны.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>“non-random chance”</kwd><kwd>“serendipity pattern”</kwd><kwd>nonlinearity</kwd><kwd>innovation</kwd><kwd>humanism</kwd><kwd>legitimacy</kwd><kwd>priority</kwd><kwd>planning scientific discoveries</kwd><kwd>innovative competencies</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>«неслучайная случайность»</kwd><kwd>«паттерн серендипити»</kwd><kwd>нелинейность</kwd><kwd>инновация</kwd><kwd>гуманизм</kwd><kwd>легитимность</kwd><kwd>приоритет</kwd><kwd>планирование открытий в науке</kwd><kwd>инновационные компетенции</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group/></article-meta><fn-group/></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Bush K.
