The authors introduce a novel application of the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) methodology to quantitatively differentiate the linguistic profiles of professional and popular science articles, establishing them as belonging to distinct functional styles. The results demonstrate that popular science articles are characterized by affective language, future-time orientation, and narrative devices to enhance accessibility and engagement for non-specialists. In contrast, professional articles exhibit terminological density, formal punctuation, and structural rigidity, reflecting their precision-oriented communication for experts. Statistically significant differences between professional and popular science articles show that the popular science functional style is being formed as an independent entity with its own linguistic system blending journalistic engagement with scientific discourse, rather than existing merely as a simplified derivative of professional science style.</p>
Статистически значимые расхождения между двумя типами статей подтверждают, что научно-популярный стиль сложился как самостоятельный лингвистический феномен, синтезирующий элементы научного и медийного дискурсов, а не является упрощенным вариантом академического научного стиля.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>scientific functional style</kwd><kwd>science discourse</kwd><kwd>popular science text</kwd><kwd>Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC)</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>научный функциональный стиль</kwd><kwd>научный дискурс</kwd><kwd>научно-популярный текст</kwd><kwd>лингвистический анализ и подсчет слов (LIWC)</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group/></article-meta><fn-group/></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><mixed-citation>Burns, T.W., O'Connor, D.J., &amp; Stocklmayer, S.M.
