Students’ readiness for such interactions, particularly in its ethical and reflexive dimensions, remains understudied. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study was the concept of ‘meta-digital competence’ (MDC), i.e., the integrative ability of an individual to interact with AI effectively, consciously, and in an ethically responsible manner, comprising cognitive, adaptive, practical, ethical, reflexive, and social components. The aim of the study was to assess university students’ readiness to interact with AI technologies in the educational process based on the components of MDC and to identify deficiencies that hinder this readiness. The study drew on a survey of 1,092 MGIMO University students (82.88% bachelor’s and 16.85% master’s students) conducted as part of a university research project in 2023-2024. For this purpose, interdisciplinary research working group developed a 27-item questionnaire; its content validity was ensured through expert discussion of item wording within the group. The authors of this study correlated the questionnaire items with the MDC components during the analysis stage. The data were processed using contingency tables, Pearson’s chi-squared test, and 95% confidence intervals. While 62% of the respondents had experience using AI tools, only 9.52% used them daily; Russian AI platforms remained little known: from 54 to 89% of the respondents were completely unfamiliar with them. The most pronounced deficiencies were found in the ethical and reflexive dimensions. Only 17% of the respondents systematically checked AI-generated information, and 2.38% received academic assignments involving AI. According to the results, students’ readiness to interact with AI turned out to be asymmetric, with the practical dimension being well ahead of the ethical and reflexive ones, and students spontaneously acquiring AI skills without pedagogical support. The study substantiates the need for systematic integration of informed and responsible AI use into the educational process, including teacher training.</p>
На основе полученных результатов обоснована необходимость систематической интеграции осознанной работы с ИИ в образовательный процесс, включая подготовку преподавателей.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>ChatGPT</kwd><kwd>meta-digital competence</kwd><kwd>artificial intelligence in education</kwd><kwd>students</kwd><kwd>generative artificial intelligence</kwd><kwd>higher education</kwd><kwd>digital competence</kwd><kwd>ChatGPT</kwd><kwd>AI literacy</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>метацифровая компетентность</kwd><kwd>искусственный интеллект в образовании</kwd><kwd>студенты</kwd><kwd>генеративный искусственный интеллект</kwd><kwd>высшее образование</kwd><kwd>цифровая компетентность</kwd><kwd>ИИ-грамотность</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group/></article-meta><fn-group/></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Albadarin, Y., Saqr, M., Pope, N., &amp; Tukiainen, M.
