The author traces the development of age-old irony as a general cultural phenomenon and concludes that the essence of phenomena, united by the term “irony” becomes clearer by reference to the history of ideas about the irony in European philosophy and aesthetics. The ideas, that were significant for scientists of different periods of history, continue to influence on modern linguistic and cognitive theory of irony. That is why consideration of irony in the philosophical and aesthetic paradigms and the study of the formation of ideas about it seems to be very productive.В статье рассматривается возникновение и развитие иронии, а также ее функционирование в дискурсе. Автор прослеживает многовековое развитие иронии как общекультурного явления и приходит к выводу, что сущность категорий, объединяемых термином «ирония», становится более ясной при обращении к истории развития представлений об иронии в европейской философии и эстетике. Идеи, выдвинутые учеными в разные исторические эпохи, продолжают оказывать влияние на современные лингвистические и когнитивные теории иронии.
