The media are the main source of information for the society, so their political significance is of a particular interest. The confrontation between the media and government in order to control the situation increases, the democracy concentrated in the media allows to form and manage the public opinion. The media are connected with the future of democracy in Latin America, because their power tends to replace military dictatorship that took place there thirty years ago. Big economic groups use the media and they decide what the agenda is, who has the voice and who's not.Существует много оснований полагать, что средства массовой информации служат одной из основных опор для развития демократии. Им приписывается целый ряд функций, и в том числе функция защиты общественной силы от совершения возможного зла, поощрения гражданственности, привлечения внимания к разнообразным точкам зрения в обществе. СМИ стремятся выполнять свои функции с одной лишь целью: добиться свободы выражения, которая наравне со свободой справедливости является одним из главных человеческих прав в современном обществе. Но СМИ имеют прямое отношение к будущему демократии в Латинской Америке еще и потому, что их власть стремится заменить военные режимы тридцатилетней давности.
