The article is devoted to the study of the main trends in the development of central US cities from 1980 to 2018. Dozens of the most populous and sparsely populated central cities of the country were identified and analyzed, as well as types of central cities in terms of population growth during the study period and accommodation features. Based on a comparative analysis of maps with different groups of central cities of the states of the country on changing the role in their state in 1980-2018 and the specific weight of the city in the state population, the main spatial trends of their development were studied and described. The main reasons that influenced the current identified processes occurring with the dynamics of the number of inhabitants in the central cities of the USA are described.

Статья посвящена изучению основных тенденций развития центральных городов США в период с 1980 по 2018 годы. Выделены и проанализированы десятки самых многонаселённых и малонаселённых центральных городов страны, а также типы центральных городов по приросту численности населения в исследуемый период и их особенности размещения.  На основе сравнительного анализа карт с разными группами центральных городов штатов страны по изменению роли в своем штате в 1980-2018 годах и удельному весу города в численности населения штата изучены и охарактеризованы основные тенденции их развития, в т.ч. пространственные. Охарактеризованы основные причины, повлиявшие на современные выявленные процессы, происходящие с динамикой числа жителей в центральных городах США.
