The present research considers criteria for selecting study material for teaching English for Special Purposes (ESP) to advanced students of environmental faculties. Texts for study should meet the following basic criteria: · be focused on the students’ future specialty, informative, up-to-date; · have a polemical focus that encourages debate and discussion; · be authentic, rich in scientific terminology, with complicated grammatical constructions, coherent, logically arranged, and clear-cut. In this study, Mark Lynas’s book “The God Species” is evaluated as ESP teaching material. It is proved that this book can be used as teaching material since it meets all the criteria mentioned above. The results obtained are evaluated by the teachers.

В настоящем исследовании рассматриваются критерии отбора учебных материалов для обучения английскому языку специальности (ESP) студентов экологических факультетов с высоким и выше среднего уровнем владения языком.

Принимая во внимание сокращение объема академических часов и неуклонное повышение требований к языковой компетенции учащихся, тексты для изучения должны соответствовать следующим основным критериям:

  • быть нацеленными на будущую специальность студентов, информативными, актуальными;
  • иметь полемическую направленность, стимулировать дебаты и дискуссии;
  • быть аутентичными, неадаптированными, богатым научной терминологией, со сложными грамматическими конструкциями, логически выстроенными.

В данной работе рассматривается книга Марка Линаса «Божественные виды». Цель исследования состоит в том, чтобы выяснить, реализует ли данный материал выбранные критерии, оценить книгу как материал для обучения языку специальности студентов экологических факультетов с высоким уровнем владения языком.

Доказано, что эта книга может быть использована в качестве учебного материала, поскольку она отвечает всем указанным критериям. Это важно, потому что количество специализированных учебников для студентов этой дисциплины сравнительно невелико. Полученные результаты оцениваются преподавателями.

Авторы считают, что данное исследование вносит вклад в область дидактики и может быть интересным для преподавателей иностранных языков.
