Abstract

The article examines the emergence and development of irony, as well as its functioning in discourse. The author traces the development of age-old irony as a general cultural phenomenon and concludes that the essence of phenomena, united by the term “irony” becomes clearer by reference to the history of ideas about the irony in European philosophy and aesthetics. The ideas, that were significant for scientists of different periods of history, continue to influence on modern linguistic and cognitive theory of irony. That is why consideration of irony in the philosophical and aesthetic paradigms and the study of the formation of ideas about it seems to be very productive.
